Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a high ankle sprain during Spurs’ Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund, with assessments ongoing to determine the severity of the injury, according to The Athletic.
The 19-year-old was forced off after only 62 minutes on Tuesday night following a heavy challenge, bringing an early end to what had been another energetic display from the Sweden international. Bergvall was replaced by Jun’ai Byfield, who made his senior debut.
Thomas Frank confirmed after the match that the injury was contact-related and admitted early indications were not encouraging, with the club waiting for further tests before placing a definitive timeline on Bergvali’s return.
The setback continues a stop-start period for the youngster, who has struggled with injuries this season, having previously missed time through concussion and a separate muscle problem earlier in the campaign.
Bergvall’s absence further compounds Tottenham’s midfield injury woes, with James Madisson, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Dejan Kulusevski all sidelined. While January signing Conor Gallagher brings some depth and freshness to the squad, Bergvall ’s ball-carrying and work rate have become increasingly valuable in recent weeks and will be greatly missed.
The injury also comes at a demanding point of Tottenham’s schedule, with domestic and European fixtures, stretching an already thin squad. Frank has previously spoken about the need to carefully manage young players’ workload, particularly during hectic and congested periods.
For now, Spurs must wait on specialist assessments, while Bergvall faces another setback just as things had begun to fall in place, with international duties for Sweden in view.
