The latest Bayern Munich injury news has revealed that the Bavarians have been dealt another defensive setback after head coach Vincent Kompany confirmed that Dayot Upamecano will miss Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against FC Augsburg through illness.
The French centre-back was absent from Bayern Munich’s 2-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday, and Bayern’s coach has now revealed that Upamecano will also be unavailable for domestic action this weekend.
In quotes revealed by Buli News, Kompany revealed how long the former RB Leipzig man will spend on the sidelines.
“He’s ill. Unfortunately he’s out,” the former Manchester City captain said during his pre-match press conference earlier today.
The Bayern boss admitted concerns over the possibility of the illness spreading within the squad, though he remains hopeful the issue will be contained.
“Let’s see who else will be missing. Nobody else for physical reasons. But if a virus comes into the dressing room, I get scared. I hope nobody will be sidelined. But Upa will be in bed for a few more days, and hopefully nobody else,” the ex-Hamburg man continued.
Upamecano’s absence further compounds Bayern’s growing list of defensive absentees. The Bavarians are already without Sacha Boey, Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanišić, leaving Kompany with limited natural options across the back line.
Despite the mounting concerns, the Belgian tactician insists Bayern still possess enough quality and versatility to cope with the situation.
“Josip Stanišić, Konrad Laimer, Sacha Boey, and now Upa are all defenders we don’t have.
“Nevertheless, we have good competition for places: Hiroki Ito is fit, Minjae is fit, Raphaël Guerreiro and Tom Bischof. Joschua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka can also play there for us.”
Bayern’s flexibility in defence has been a recurring theme this season, with several midfielders and full-backs asked to fill in during periods of injury congestion.
The Record Meister remains firmly in contention across domestic and European competitions, but maintaining defensive stability will be key as the season enters a demanding phase.
With multiple defenders unavailable and illness threatening further disruption, Saturday’s clash against Augsburg could provide a timely test of Bayern’s depth and adaptability under Kompany’s management.
For now, the focus remains on managing Upamecano’s recovery and ensuring the situation does not worsen within the squad.
The six-time UEFA Champions League winners have already secured qualification to the UCL round of sixteen and can afford to rest some first-team players in their final group phase game against PSV Eindhoven next Wednesday.
