Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen Set to Join Girona on Loan

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is now out of favor at the club, is close to leaving the club and joining La Liga side Girona on loan for the rest of the season.

It has been reported by Nil Solà on Cadena SER that the three-way agreement between FC Barcelona, Girona FC, and Marc-André ter Stegen is already in its final phase, pending only the official signature.

After intense negotiations, the German goalkeeper will join Girona on loan until next June, seeking quality minutes in a competitive environment following recent moves in the Blaugrana goal.

Ter Stegen who has been at the club for over a decade has lost his place in the starting XI to Joan Garcia and was an unused substitute in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night, as Hansi Flick selected his No. 1 once again and saw him put in another eye-catching display.

The sticking point is likely to be Ter Stegen’s salary, which Girona can’t afford, but the goalkeeper’s desire to leave and in search of game time means there is optimism a deal can be done. Though Ter Stegen will have to forgo a significant portion of his salary, thus facilitating his inclusion in the Girona squad’s wage bill.

Ter Stegen has been told to move on by Germany sporting director Rudi Voller, that needs to be playing regular football to make the World Cup 2026.

For its part, Girona FC has made a significant financial effort within its real possibilities. The club, presided over by Delfí Geli, will pay the proportional part of the salary that its budget can assume, strictly complying with the competition’s financial control.

The arrival of the German international represents a significant quality boost for Míchel Sánchez’s squad, strengthening their goal with one of the best specialists in the world.
