Eto’o Handed Four-match Ban For AFCON Misconduct

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President and ex-footballer Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for alleged misconduct during the team’s 2–0 defeat to hosts Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations last Friday.

The sanction was imposed after CAF’s Disciplinary Board found the Cameroonian Football Federation president guilty of misconduct during the TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 fixture in Rabat.

Eto’o was ruled to have violated CAF statutes relating to sportsmanship, leading to a stadium ban covering Cameroon’s next four official AFCON matches.

While CAF did not publicly highlight the exact incident, Eto’o was reportedly seen gesturing angrily in the direction of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation president during the match over refereeing decisions.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe was also seated nearby during the incident, which drew attention both inside the stadium and on social media.

Players from both sides also pushed and fought each other, and CAF announced on Sunday that it had opened investigations into violent confrontations during AFCON matches.

The governing body will also announce its decision in the aftermath of the quarter-final match involving Nigeria against Algeria. The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was also fined $20,000 as part of the decision, which CAF confirmed in a brief statement released on Wednesday.

The statement reads: “The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT said on Thursday, adding that it would appeal.

“FECAFOOT reaffirms its support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice,” it added.

CAF declined to provide further details on the specific incident, stating only that no additional comment would be made on the matter.

Hosts Morocco will play Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
