Manchester United are reportedly looking to kick-start new caretaker head coach Michael Carrick’s reign at Old Trafford with the signing of highly-rated Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves.
The Red Devils have undergone yet another managerial change after sacking Ruben Amorim at the turn of the year and Carrick, the tenth boss to take the reins of the 13-time Premier League champions in thirteen years, is now tasked with steering the ship until the end of the season.
With a new face in the dugout, Man United appear to be considering ways to bolster their squad this January, particularly in the middle of the park where the team has consistently struggled to compete in recent years.
United’s top targets to revamp that area of the pitch include the likes of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
However, the Old Trafford giants have a fairly strict budget for this winter window and will likely wait until the summer before furthering their interests in any of the aforementioned players.
Despite their strict winter budget though, the Man United hierarchy are open to the potential addition of former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves this month, with the Portuguese reportedly available on the market for £20 million.
Neves, currently on the books of Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, has been heavily linked with a move back to Europe recently and Metro reports that the decision makers at Old Trafford have made funds available for the potential acquisition of the 28-year-old.
However, the Red Devils are not alone in their admiration for Neves with Premier League rivals Arsenal also weighing up the possibility of luring the Portugal international to the Emirates.
Neves enjoyed five impressive years in the Premier League with Wolves, racking up 177 top-flight appearances and registering 30 goal contributions. If a return to England’s top division does materialize, the Portuguese will be a real asset for any team he joins.
