Michael Carrick has made it clear that his priority is to do the job properly and deliver results following his return to Manchester United.

The former Red Devils midfielder was appointed as caretaker manager on Tuesday and is set to remain in charge until the end of the current season.

Carrick returns to Old Trafford on interim basis

The former Middlesbrough manager has completed a sensational return to Old Trafford after five years away, although his spell is set to last just six months.

The 44-year-old had previously taken charge during a brief spell in 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, overseeing three matches before departing.

Carrick saw off competition from Solskjaer and Ruud Van Nistelrooy for the position which became vacant after Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier in the month.

The Portuguese was dismissed just 14 months into his spell, having won just 24 of his 63 matches in all competitions and with a 38.1% win percentage.

Manchester United endured a disappointing first season under Amorim, finishing 15th in the English Premier League and suffering a 1-0 defeat to rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Europa League final.

Carrick focused on success in short stint

The former Manchester United midfielder will be joined at the club by former England assistant coach Steve Holland, while Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion also make up the coaching staff.

During his first interview session, the 44-year-old pledged to do things the right way as he hopes to achieve success during his short spell at the club.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to come back through the doors and be part of the club again. It’s a big responsibility, a massive pleasure and a privilege to be here, but we want to do a good job – this place deserves that”, Carrick stated.

“I want to be off my seat, I want to be enjoying watching the boys play and results obviously need to come with that.”

Carrick will be at the dugout for the first time in his second spell for the Manchester derby on Saturday, before visiting league leaders Arsenal next weekend.
