RB Leipzig and Germany forward Timo Werner is reportedly on the verge of leaving the German Bundesliga to join Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
The 29-year-old Champions League winner has endured a shocking decline in recent years, with his disappointing loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season doing little to boost his plummeting stocks.
An initially promising six-month loan spell, which began in January 2024, saw both RB Leipzig and Spurs agree to extend Werner’s stay in North London until the summer of 2025.
However, due to poor form, the former VFB Stuttgart man soon fell out of favour under Ange Postecoglou and the Europa League winners opted against making his move permanent.
After returning to Leipzig last summer, Werner currently finds himself well below the pecking order at the Red Bull Arena. The Germany international has managed a meager tally of just 13 minutes across three appearances in the German top flight this season.
With chances almost non-existent at his current club, the former Chelsea forward is reportedly now seeking to revive his career in a different environment.
There have been speculations about a switch to Major League Soccer since the end of last year, with Leipzig’s sister club Red Bull New York and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami touted as potential destinations.
However, The Athletic reports that the German forward is edging closer to joining San Jose Earthquakes as a designated player to fill the void left behind by Josef Martinez’s exit to Mexican club side Tijuana.
Having been declared surplus to requirements at the Red Bull Arena where he’s currently one of Leipzig’s highest earners, this potential move to San Jose Earthquakes offers Werner a much-needed life line.
