Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned Europe, Asia and South America.
The Brazilian playmaker, once regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football, confirmed his decision after returning to boyhood club São Paulo FC earlier this year.
Oscar first rose to global prominence during his time at Chelsea, where he became a key figure in the club’s midfield following his arrival from Internacional in 2012.
Known for his technical ability, eye for goal and composure in big matches, he quickly won over supporters at Stamford Bridge.
In total, he scored 38 goals in 203 appearances for the Blues before making a headline-grabbing move to the Chinese Super League in January 2017.
His departure came midway through the 2016/17 campaign, with Chelsea going on to lift another Premier League title in May of that year.
Oscar joined Shanghai Port, then known as Shanghai SIPG, in a deal that was one of the most lucrative transfers at the time.
While some questioned his decision to leave European football at the peak of his powers, the Brazilian enjoyed a successful spell in China. He won three Chinese Super League titles and established himself as one of the standout foreign players in the division.
Beyond the silverware, Oscar played a pivotal leadership role, becoming the creative heartbeat of the Shanghai side and helping raise the club’s international profile.
After eight years in China, Oscar opted for a sentimental return to São Paulo, the club where his professional journey began. He signed a three-year deal in January 2025, marking a full-circle moment in his career.
Though no longer in his physical prime, his experience and technical quality were viewed as valuable assets for the Brazilian side, both on and off the pitch.
However, just over a year into that homecoming chapter, the former Brazil international has now decided to hang up his boots.
Oscar will be remembered for his elegance on the ball, intelligent movement and knack for delivering in crucial moments.
From memorable European nights with Chelsea to domestic dominance in China and an emotional farewell in Brazil, his career reflects both ambition and individuality.
Though he stepped away from Europe earlier than many expected, his trophy haul and consistent performances ensured he leaves the game with a legacy that stretches across continents.
