Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement to sign highly rated Argentine talent Valentin Barco from sister club RC Strasbourg Alsace, with the move now edging closer to completion.
According to Football Talk, Argentina journalist Augusto Cesar, the 21-year-old is set to swap Ligue 1 for the Premier League this summer after the Blues accelerated negotiations during the international break.
Barco’s rise began in Argentina with Boca Juniors, where his dazzling displays at youth level quickly earned him promotion to the senior squad under former manager Miguel Angel Russo.
Initially introduced as an adventurous left-back, Barco showcased an attacking flair that made him stand out.
Comfortable driving forward, threading passes and delivering quality crosses, he soon demonstrated the tactical intelligence to operate further up the pitch.
Coaches began experimenting with him in advanced roles, eventually transforming him into a dynamic attacking midfielder.
Barco’s first taste of European football came in January 2024 when he joined Brighton & Hove Albion. Although opportunities were limited, he made his Premier League debut in a difficult outing against Manchester City F.C., a 4-0 defeat that nevertheless marked an important milestone in his career.
A short loan stint followed at Sevilla FC, where he managed just nine appearances. The move failed to fully unlock his potential, but it added valuable experience in a competitive European environment.
His career found fresh momentum when Strasbourg, part of the BlueCo multi-club model, secured his services in January 2025. In France, Barco has flourished.
Deployed predominantly as a central midfielder, he has grown into a key figure, contributing 11 combined goals and assists this season. His technical sharpness, ability to dictate tempo and willingness to press aggressively have caught the eye.
He also marked his latest international call-up in style, scoring for Argentina in a recent outing against Zambia, further underlining his growing influence at both club and country level.
