Liverpool have no intention of parting ways with Arne Slot this summer, despite a title defence that has fallen well short of the standards the Dutchman set in his debut campaign.
The defending Premier League champions have endured a turbulent 2025/26 season, dropping out of the title race by December and now battling simply to secure Champions League qualification.
The club, however, sees the bigger picture. Per The Athletic, Liverpool believe there is genuine mitigation for Slot’s struggles this season.
Senior figures at the club have pointed to the tragic death of Diogo Jota, recruitment decisions made above Slot’s remit, new signings needing time to adjust, key personnel losing form, and a significant injury crisis as factors that have combined to make this season uniquely difficult to navigate.
David Ornstein earlier reported on The Athletic FC Podcast that Liverpool are “steadfastly behind” Slot, adding that there is “no thought to changing coach” and that the club are actively planning with him ahead of next season.
Ornstein went further, noting that if Liverpool were to run a recruitment process for a new manager, Slot himself represents the “exact profile” they would be targeting, with no candidates on the market considered a better fit.
Slot signed a three-year deal when he arrived from Feyenoord in June 2024, with his contract running until June 2027.
He won the Premier League title in his first season but has managed only 26 wins in his last 50 games, an underwhelming performance compared to the 36 victories in his first 50.
The next fortnight will nonetheless test Liverpool’s resolve, with crucial games remaining in three competitions. Whether those results shift the calculation remains to be seen, but for now, the backing from above remains firm.
