Resurgent Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Borussia Dortmund’s central defender Waldemar Anton as they line up potential defensive reinforcements ahead of next season.
Anton has been impressive for Dortmund since joining the Bundesliga giants from domestic rivals VfB Stuttgart two seasons ago, and his performances have earned him admirers across Europe, with many top clubs keenly monitoring his situation ahead of the transfer window.
As per BILD, Manchester United are expected to enter the race for Anton’s signature this summer, with the Germany international already on the radar of top clubs like Atletico Madrid, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.
United clearly need defensive reinforcements this summer, particularly following the fitness struggles of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez throughout the season.
The Red Devils, on course to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, are aware of the need to improve the depth of their squad with quality options across all areas of the pitch.
Anton, who is currently 30-years-old and has two years to run on his current contract, represents one of such opportunities in the market.
The German defender’s contract situation has reportedly put Manchester United under the impression that they may be able to secure his services for a potential bargain fee this summer.
In truth, the Old Trafford giants are currently well stocked in that central defensive position with the likes of Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire all options alongside the aforementioned duo of De Light and Martinez.
However, with potential fitness setbacks and the prospect of competing in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup next season, recruiting another reliable option to join that roster would not be going overboard.
