Reigning La Liga champions Barcelona currently have no plans to pursue a summer move for Tottenham Hotspur star Xavi Simons despite ongoing speculation linking the midfielder with a return to the club.
Simons, who left La Masia in 2019, has frequently been associated with a comeback to Catalonia, with discussions reportedly taking place as recently as last summer before he eventually moved to North London.
However, the latest reports indicate that Barcelona have now taken a clear stance on the situation.
Even amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Tottenham, given how their season has unravelled, the Catalan giants are not considering a move for the 22-year-old ahead of the upcoming transfer window, per reports from SPORT.
According to reports, one of the major reasons for Barcelona’s current stance is the financial cost of any potential deal.
Tottenham are expected to demand a fee in the region of €45 million, having invested heavily in Simons’ arrival, and such a figure is currently viewed as excessive given the Blaugrana’s well-documented budget constraints and other priorities in the squad.
Beyond finances, sporting philosophy is also influencing Barca’s position. The club hierarchy is said to be wary of the message a high-profile return for Simons would send, particularly given his decision to leave the academy earlier in his career.
Their current project places a strong emphasis on developing and rewarding homegrown talent, and a costly re-signing would run counter to that approach.
As a result, despite the persistent links, a return to Camp Nou is not under consideration at this stage.
While Simons’ future may still become a topic of discussion should Tottenham entertain offers, Barcelona are not expected to be part of that conversation.
