Chelsea looking to sign Lazio defender Mario Gila

Mario Grila

Chelsea are weighing up a summer move for Lazio centre-back Mario Gila as they look to fix their defensive issues ahead of next season.

The Blues are expected to prioritise a new central defender following their disappointing defensive displays, most notably conceding eight goals across two legs against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

According to reports, Mario Gila has emerged as a serious option, with the Spaniard impressing in Serie A since joining Lazio in 2022.

The 24-year-old has made over 100 appearances for the Italian side and has also earned recognition at the international level with Spain.

A product of Real Madrid’s academy, Gila brings both experience and composure, qualities Chelsea are keen to add to their backline.

However, the Premier League side are not alone in the race, with AC Milan and Inter Milan also monitoring the defender’s situation.

Gila is reportedly valued at around £26 million, with Real Madrid still holding a 50% sell-on clause.

Chelsea already have a crowded list of centre-backs, including Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo.

But injuries and inconsistent performances have exposed the need for a reliable, top-level defender.

Manager Liam Rosenior is expected to oversee a reshuffle in defence, with several players potentially heading for the exit door before new arrivals are sanctioned.

Reports suggest Chelsea could be open to selling players like Chalobah, Badiashile and Tosin as they look to streamline their squad.

With financial balancing and squad structure both in focus, any move for Gila will likely depend on departures.

Still, the Spaniard’s profile, a proven performer in a top European league, fits what Chelsea need as they aim to rebuild a defence capable of competing at the highest level.
