Flamengo have dismissed Filipe Luis just hours after the team completed an 8-0 annihilation of Madureira, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that had seemed set to last.
The result itself was emphatic. The aggregate scoreline over the tie read 11-0, and Flamengo booked their place in the Campeonato Carioca final in style.
Yet by the end of the night, the headlines were different. The club confirmed Filipe Luis’ departure, along with members of his coaching staff, in a move that caught many around Brazilian football off guard.
Less than three months ago, Filipe Luis was still basking in the glow of a historic campaign. He guided Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores title and lifted the domestic league trophy in the same season, a double that reaffirmed the club’s status at the summit of South American football.
A contract extension followed in December, tying him to the club until 2027. At the time, it felt like the beginning of something promising.
But the new season has been nothing like the last. Flamengo were beaten in the Supercopa do Brasil and fell short in the Recopa Sudamericana.
Performances in the state championship group stage raised eyebrows, with defeats that did little to calm an already restless fan base. Four points from the opening three rounds of the Série A have only added to the sense that the ship was sinking.
Internally, there was a growing feeling that results alone were no longer enough. Even a big win came with questions attached.
The 8-0 trashing of Madureira did not extinguish the doubts about direction, consistency or the general mood around the squad.
Filipe Luis leaves with his reputation unsullied as a rising coach. At 40, he had already shown tactical nous and the ability to manage a dressing room laden with expectations.
This decision, although it might have taken the football world by storm, suggests that those at the helm of the club believe the standards set last year must be met immediately, and not eventually.
There was no room for patience, even after silverware and even after eight goals in a single evening.
